The Institute of Radiation Physics conducts research for states of matter under extreme conditions and in very small dimensions.
The Department of Laser Particle Acceleration is looking for a PhD Student (f/m/d) Laser-driven ion acceleration with cryogenic jet targets.
In the 1st year it is a 50% position. Increase to 75% in the 2nd year.
Your tasks
- Your work will focus on the development of laser driven ion accelerators together with an international team
- You will mainly be concerned with experiments at the high power laser facility Draco at HZDR to study, control and optimize acceleration processes
- For that you will apply the novel laser target concept of cryogenic sources of hydrogen or other noble gases for high-repetition rate experiments
- Complementary, plasma and particle diagnostics need to be used and developed
Your profile
- Completed university studies (Master/Diploma) in the field of Physics or related field
- You are Interested to work on experiments in a laboratory, perfect would be experience in working with optical setups and high power lasers
- Ideally, you have background in the fields of accelerator, plasma, or laser physics
- You have an interest in the world of materials at ultra-low temperatures
- You enjoy autonomous scientific work as well as project activities
- You have excellent communication skills for the work in larger international teams
- You have a very good command of English and are able to present results convincingly, both orally and in writing
